Sony's INZONE gaming peripheral brand has been making waves since its launch, quickly earning a reputation among serious players. Now, Sony is adding something new to the lineup: the INZONE H6 Air, the brand's first open-back gaming headset, priced at $199.99 in the US.

The H6 Air is built on the foundation of Sony's well-regarded MDR-MV1 studio monitor headphones, adapted and retuned specifically for gaming. The open-back design brings what that form factor does best — a wide, natural soundstage and a strong sense of spatial depth — making it particularly compelling for story-driven RPGs and adventure games where atmosphere and immersion matter as much as competitive performance.

The decision to go this direction wasn't arbitrary. Sony's own data showed that roughly one in four MDR-MV1 buyers listed gaming as one of their intended uses — which made a strong case for building a gaming-optimized open-back headset from the ground up.

Connectivity is handled via a 3.5mm wired connection, and the included Audio Box allows integration with Sony's INZONE Hub PC software for deeper audio customization. The boom mic is detachable. It's worth noting that while the Audio Box shares the same exterior design as the one bundled with the wired INZONE E9, the internal hardware is different — so the H6 Air's Audio Box is not cross-compatible with the E9's.

At just 199g (without the mic and cable attached), the H6 Air is the lightest headset INZONE has ever made. The headband draws from the co-developed INZONE H9 II — built in partnership with esports organization Fnatic — and has been further refined to shed weight. The yokes and internal components have also been swapped for lighter materials wherever possible without compromising durability. The lighter build also means Sony could achieve a secure fit with lower clamping force, reducing fatigue during long sessions.

On-ear controls include a mic mute button and a volume wheel. And while lightweight headsets can sometimes feel cheap, Sony pushed back against that with a design detail called Gradational Hole Design — a pattern of precisely arranged perforations across the aluminum earcup housing that gives the headset a refined, premium look. The holes are punched before the housing is formed, with careful attention paid to ensuring the pattern holds its shape cleanly even in areas prone to distortion during manufacturing.

The drivers themselves are derived from the MDR-MV1, retuned for gaming. Pair the headset with the INZONE Hub software, and you unlock a custom EQ preset called RPG/Adventure, developed in collaboration with sound designers at PlayStation Studios (Sony Interactive Entertainment). Rather than a standard user-adjustable 10-band EQ, this preset applies much finer-grained tuning to deliver what Sony describes as a studio-grade audio experience tailored to in-game environments.

On top of that, the H6 Air's audio performance has been verified by the sound teams at Kojima Productions and the audio crew behind Capcom's upcoming title PRAGMATA — both of which awarded the headset their recommended audio endorsement.
